Two New HDD Reamers

Two New Big HDD Reamers

Created: JAnuary 2025. New HDD Reamers

We’re pleased to announce the completion of two new HDD reamers built in house for Kier Contracting.  No Dig Equipment supplied a 18″ Fly Cutter and 16″ Barrel Reamer which were designed to work in tandem for enhanced performance. Both reamers feature robust 6 5/8″ API reg shafts, ensuring durability and efficiency in demanding conditions. These HDD Reamers are being deployed by Kier Contracting on a gas pipeline projects in Kwinana, WA.

Reamers are essential tools used in underground construction for installing pipelines, cables, and other utilities with minimal surface disruption. These reamers are designed to enlarge a pilot hole created by a drill bit, allowing for the safe and efficient installation of larger diameter pipes. Their design minimises environmental impact and reduces the need for extensive excavation, making them ideal for urban areas and sensitive landscapes. Our HDD reamers offer improved durability and performance and are ideally suited to large pipe infrastructure projects.

      Road Crossing

The 25 Tonnes Pilot Tube Microtunneling bored a 225 mm diameter PVC pipe, 12 m long under a road in Armadale, Western Australia, without any traffic disruption.

Westscope Contracting complete the job in less than 2 days with a small crew of 2 people, significantly reducing the labor cost.

The Pilot Tube Microtunneling B250 has enough power to handle most applications in most ground conditions.

Perth and its suburban area is located on the West Coast of Australia which is predominantly sandy however the Armadale area is located in clay country and therefore the works were undertaken in a soft yellow clay, which proved not problem for the B250 Micro Tunneler.

Westscope Contracting have been using their B250 Pilot Tube Micro Tunneller machine for a few years now and have installed over 3.4Km of sewer pipe using this system and the machine has never let them down.

Troubleshooting Guide From a Real Pipe Bursting Contractor

Troubleshooting Guide From a Real Pipe Bursting Contractor

Here is some info sent in from a pipe bursting contractor who has obviously encountered some problems in the past.  It demonstrates some interesting solutions, so we thought we would pass it on to anyone who is interested.

“As we all learn, it is near impossible to crack through the old fashioned malleable cast iron items that can be encountered at times. We found several ways of dealing with these.

We sometime used a self propelled post hole digger and used that to bore down to the problem item.

Method No 1 – Call the nearest industrial gas suppliers, B.O.C had a mobile service in Brisbane, and a quick hit with a slug of liquid nitrogen will crack the iron ring item.

Method No 2 – Try the head down with an oxy torch method to cut the mongrel out and it works too but not easy. Difficult to prevent splatter getting on the mole body.

Method No 3 – We have also used a stick welder to run a series of beads across the item to make it brittle and that worked too. The Mole was able to crack it but the trick is to get the welds down around the halfway mark on both sides, otherwise the ring will still grab the mole body, not as tight but enough to be a slight worry.

I have read of fellows in Britain using acid to free a stuck mole, but I reckon that would have to be a last resort.

I hope this isn’t too outdated, but if it helps someone out of a bind someday then why not.

      B250 under New Town

This would have made excavation very disruptive and expensive. A trenchless solution using a No Dig supplied B250 Pilot machine allowed installation of 150mm diameter PVC pipe to pinpoint accuracy. All drilling works were completed in less than 14 working days with minimal fuss and disruption.

B110 Small Microtunneler with Real Grunt

Typically 150mm sewer pipe is installed to grades of 1/200. In good sandy ground conditions this machine has achieved bores in excess of 40m in length and to millimetre accuracy. Generally the machine is operated from inside a standard backhoe trenching box, however timber sets to 3.5m deep and steel caisson shafts have also proved very successful.

5 reasons to replace a sewer line

Here are some great photos which show 5 common reasons of a typical deteriorating sewerage system.

These photos on the left show some typical problems of the old earthenware pipe and are classic cases for renewal by pipe bursting.

      Reason 1 : “Hammer Taps”
Here a junction collapses and falls into the pipe, this will generate some major problems in the main line as well as the house connection.

      Reason 2 : “Root Penetration”
This is a huge problem and there is much ongoing work required to keep the roots in check.  Why not just get rid of the problem once and for all and replace the pipe with Poly using pipe bursting.

      Reason 3 : “Collapsed Main”
Not an uncommon problem and can happen for many reasons. This sort of failure is a great cause of infiltration and ex-filtration causing pollution to surrounding waterways.

      Reason 4 : “Cracking”
To avoid bigger leaks and before the main line collapse, replacing the pipe as soon as you detect cracks is always a good idea.

      Reason 5 : “Offset Joints”
Due to ground settlement, landslide, tree roots and poor bedding during installation, the main line can suffer from this weakness and therefore generate massive leaks.

What are the choices you have to face these major problems ?
There are a few choices you can utilise to fix some of the above problems,
      – Open Cut Method
      – Relining
      – Pipe Bursting

But I believe that in small pipelines like this one, the best and most cost effective ways to fix the problem is by using pipe bursting.

        New B750 Pilot Tube Microtunneler

The latest release of the Pilot Tube Microtunneler B750, a 50T push microtunneler. The perfect machine for installing sewer lines up to 400mm diameter.

The new machine will be going to work in the Perth region where it will be primarily used on Infill sewer and land development projects.

We have redesigned the B750 upon receiving feedback from our customers for a bigger and more powerful machine and the new rig includes a much stronger thrust box which can handle much greater loads than before.

The power pack has also been upgraded to provide increased production and faster turnaround on the job.

Overall the new B750 keeps the same philosophy of a strong reliable microtunneler which is both simple to operate and maintain.

The footprint of the drill has not changed and can still be set up in a standard shoring box or caisson with a minimum size of just 2.4m
